Short Order Cook, Anyone?

I got this idea for this post from Ginny, over in her community at Lemon Drop Pie.  And more than anything, I’m curious if you are a short order cook for your kids at meal times?  Do you make more than one dinner a night?  I am proud to say that I am not.  I only make one meal a night…however there are times when I bend the rules.  They must have tried everything on their plate.  If it’s clear they dislike it -and I can tell- I will throw in a few nuggets into the microwave.  I have to say, though, that doesn’t happen very often.  I know I was blessed with good eaters!  Especially with Emma…there are kids with her same condition that have to see food therapists to get over aversions or sensory issues when it comes to food.  I know a special little girl whose food repertoire consists of about 4 different foods!!  Holy heck I have it easy in the food department!

Emma went through a growth spurt for about 6 weeks.  There was a time when she’d eat 4 waffles for breakfast.  And then want a snack before school!  And we don’t go here hardly at all, but when we hit McD’s, she’ll eat 2 cheeseburgers!  Maybe she does that because we don’t go often!  And Mason’s just a growing boy.  Can’t say much else about him!  Sometimes Mason can even eat more than I will!!

What do you do at meal times?  Do your kids rule the menu?  Or do they get what they get? I’m always looking for new ideas and solutions!!

  1. Not so much a shorter order cook as a waitress…always refilling drinks, serving more, never a chance to sit down and enjoy my own food! We do have some picky eaters, though but if they don’t eat dinner they either go to bed hungry or i might cave in and give them a banana.

  2. Yes, I’m a waitress too!! I should start getting tips! Isn’t mom’s food always cold? We’re the same way with the pickiness…if they don’t like it, I’ll probably give them a cheese stick. Especially Emma…you know, some protein!

  3. My kids get what they get, basically. I make dinner, and if they don’t like it I will give them a pb&j sandwhich, but that is it. Mason especially has a texture problem with food, while Connor will eat anything. So I offer the sandwhich to be a little sympathetic to his sensory issues, yet not make several different dinners.

  4. My kids eat what I make for the entire family for dinner. 95% of the time they do really well, then there are the occasions that they just will not eat whatever we are having. At those times, I give them cottage cheese (which they love). My two youngest have only been to McD’s twice for lunch (they have eaten breakfast there a couple of times on road trips), and they get the cheesburger happy meal with apple slices and milk. I figure I don’t even need to give them the choice for fries, or they’d never go back!

  5. AZ Mamma, I am impressed!! That takes some dedication! I’m curious if they’ve been to ANY fast foods??? :-)
Amy, we’re on the same page! ;-)
